     Sadly there is no community without domestic violence and abuse, our South Asian community is no different.​ It is an extremely painful and demoralizing experience for all those impacted by it. This includes our community at large which tends to silence and hide the problem as a way to deal with the shame and stigma it assigns to it. The repercussions to the individuals and our community can be devastating. Despite the commonly known prevalence and pervasiveness of violence and abuse within our community, there is a poor understanding of exactly what it is and the support available for those impacted by it. 

Understanding Abuse

     Fatima Wasim, PhD, NCC, LPC is a therapist specializing in working with individuals experiencing domestic violence and/or abuse. In this article she shares her expertise to provide an excellent explanation of what constitutes violence and abuse and how they are related.
